MNHS MOS Training

Last August 9-10 we condcuted Microsoft Office Specialist Training in our school in full participation of the Microsoft Philippines. we trained 15 teachers and 5 Philippines Marines. the training is a significant in carrying our program the IBM because participants got more knowledge on the manipulation of the computer. most of our participants were IBM eMentor Participants during our training. I got certificate from Microsoft as one of the trainers... regards guys......

Malabang NHS as ICT Pilot school in ARMM

The Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) visited our school again to look into the possibilty to make it as a pilot school in the ARMM on the application of the ICT in Teaching. they were very much impressed on the setting environment of our school. according to them the school is more than qualified being a recipient of many programs such as: INTEL TEACH TO THE FUTUTE, TUDLO MINDANAO PROJECT, MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST. And of course we have the IBM eMentor Scholars. they interviewed me on our program and according to them appreciated and excellent. they will come back maybe on next month to observe me on my teaching using ICT. Good luck me guys this is for IBM eMentor Program......

IBM Thesis

i am planning to conduct my thesis on my masteral degree on the use of ICT in teaching instruction. i submitted my proposed titles to my professor Dr. Pendililang Gunting, Dean of the College of Education, Mindanao State University and fortunately she accepted my first choice. "Curriculum Technology Integration into Teaching Instruction: A Basis for Becoming a Contemporary Teacher" this was approved as my title to undergo in my graduate studies. my professor really interested on my problem in fact she interviewed me about the IBM eMentor Program. Shes proud and happy that this program had extended to Mindanao more specifically to Lanao del Sur. she suggested also that the respondents would be the IBM eMentors scholars to be more reliable and authentic. i hope you will help me on this regard guys. i am looking forward for your positive actiion. this study would really a significance as much as education is concerned......... miss you all guys

SASE BOOSTER REVIEW CLASSES

The MSU External Units are having the SASE BOOSTER REVIEW CLASSES from Aug. 22 to Aug. 30..This is a program to review the top 30 students from each of the 13 MSU External Units from Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte in preparation for the MSU SASE EXAM.
Because of this,Ma'am Marie, Sir Arnold, Ma'am Sal and yours truly (ALL FROM MSU EXTERNAL UNITS), are so busy as we are part of the module writers and lecturers for the 10 day booster review classes..

We are so much apprehensive, for we expect that the GEM or EDUQUEST team will arrive any moment for the monitoring..

It would be very much appreciated if we be informed beforehand of the monitoring schedule, so that we can arrange our schedules with our ongoing Booster Review Classes which is held at the MSU LNCAT in Marawi City..

Thank you very much....

Congratulations...Ms. No-rain!

Alhamdulillah and congratulations to you, Ms. No-rain. You have now started your journey of bringing your students into the world of learning through modern technology. And that's where we're heading for.

As we move on to this journey just don't forget, we need also to adapt other strategies wherein some other lessons or subject matter cannot be presented with the use of PowerPoint Presentation or advance technology. As for me, sometimes I adapt role playing and some online activities that is appropriate for my subject matter.

As my students perform their activities, I cannot explain how they feel and even puzzled how can they do it alone without their teachers guide. Adapting the Online Activities from our Mentor Place, my students competed in performing their activities. With four members in each group and making use of a piece of paper as a representation of a chocolates, they have to divide among themselves wherein "no two" of the member of each group will not have the same amount or part of the chocolates given to them. Then, after division they have to find out whose member has the greatest and least amount.

This activity made my students realized that what they learn in school is related to our daily lives. Wanna try? Just browse in our Mentor Place and pick what online actvity you want your students to perform. Try it.

The eMentor Room

Finally...

Well..I don't have to make excuses anymore...But nevertheless, I wana make it....

I haven't had the chance to blog for sometime...As usual, yours truly has been so busy preparing her, EHEM, eMentor room...Not only that, I am so engrossed with finishing my final lesson presentation, which took me a month to think over and conceptualize...Fortunately, I have just submitted it to Sir Meoh, and according to him, no editing is needed..I don't have to place his "nice comments" here...thanks sir...

I am also not too keen to blog just for the sake of blogging...After all, the readers can tell if what I wrote here has some sense or not..I can't think of anything to blog the past few days...My mind is simply blank...Even if Sir Meoh was prodding us to do so, I can't get my mind to write anything...Still an excuse...kidding....

Alas and Alhamdulillah (thank GOD), just finished my lesson presentation....had my very own eMentor room....had conducted some classes already using my materials....and had taken pictures in the process....What more excuse can I come up with???

All I can say is that, there's no great joy than to watch your students so intent in what you say, and so engrossed in the lessons being delivered...All they can say after each lesson, is...MORE...MORE...and MORE...

I have sacrificed so much to come up with my eMentor Room...Words can't describe what me and our principal has gone through just to have it all set up...But because of my insistence, our principal finally agreed to give me the room, and purchase the necessary materials needed, including a digital camera for that matter...

I have rounded all of the computer shops here in Iligan City for the video card with TV out, but to no avail...Then off to Cagayan de Oro...Fortunately, one is available in one computer shop there...Other shops have some VCards but way too expensive, if I have bought it, my principal would fire me...

Finally I have the card...But it still has to be installed in one of our CPU's...I again hauled one of the CPU's from school, and had it sent to a shop here in Iligan and installed it...All with fees of course...

Not that I blamed our principal of course...If she can have her way, we have had our eMentor room long ago...Her hands are simply tied...We don't have existing funds...That's the point of the matter...But nevertheless, her support is amazing...From her personal services, to her personal funds, she has supported the whole project all the way...

Finally, last week, I was able to set up our eMentor room, and conducted classes there...I have all good words from everyone...It's really different when you have the whole process set up...Really really different...I didn't expect my class to be trasformed like that...Even if we don't have projector, it's the closest thing we could have acheived to having the real thing...I can say proudly, my hard work paid off....

This is kinda getting long...I have so many things to say...But am afraid, this is not a book..This is just an article...So I'll save what I have to say in my future blogs, which will be in less than 24 hours LOL...Yes, am back...More inspired, and more intent to finish what I have started...

Thanks to my co eMentor Scholars...Ate Marie, Ma'am Sally, Ma'am Yam, Sir Arnold, and Sir Acsie....

IBM helps a lot!

Alhamdulillah! Because of IBM eMentoring, we can be contemporary teachers, teachers who are not left behind by modern technology. We will be making difference in the deliberation of our daily lessons and we will be making our students lifelong learners. For me, I find it so interesting and so my students do. As they commented that, "Ma'am, it's just like viewing the television. We want to have more activities on the computer because we enjoy the lesson , we don't want to go out from the computer room." Regards to all!

Insight of Marchan Padla

Reflect on this insight from Marchan Padla during the culminating program of my reecho..

Insights and Impressions on IBM E-Mentoring Training

Every time I finish my lecture, my polo and pants are powdered with chalk. One day, when I was on my way to the Faculty Office, Ma’am Omeirah Maruhom told me that, “I am a good teacher because I have the signs on my clothes.” I was elated by her comments at the same time struck by the depth of her observation. But also I realized I have a problem. How can I avoid the dusts of chalk? Everyday I have the same problem, either a chalk-smothered polo or whitened pants. Until the day came- the
IBM E-Mentoring Program. The training showed us the opportunity to be creative and resourceful teachers while enjoying the benefits of information technology and integrating the system in a classroom setting. Thanks to IBM, GEM and USAID. Thanks to Mr. Acquil Andog for his enthusiasm in bringing the program to every nook and cranny of this school.

Since this is “technology integration” to every learning area, allow me to use some of the jargons in the cyber world that somehow symbolized the different aspects of this training.

BLOG – is short for web log. This is a personal journal that people put on website for others to see. Throughout the training the word “mentoring” was being used to also emphasize that we as participants are here to share our knowledge for others who lagged behind. I observed that we are helping one another, assisting one another in creating our PowerPoint presentation. This is a symbolism of sharing one’s blog to others. As teachers we are busy individuals but still, we are able to share our time to undergo this training.

GEGABYTE - an amount of information equal to 1024 megabytes. As teachers we are challenged to gain information and creative skills for our teaching methods. Within us are huge hungry spaces ready to devour information and trainings. We have inexhaustible spaces, millions of gigabytes, potentials that are waiting to be filled up with useful information and skills. The young generation is regarded as the computer geeks of today’s “increasingly information-rich world” but this notion did not stop us (young at heart) to gain same level of expertise.

GLITCH– an error in the program or in the computer. During the training we have encountered a lot of barriers – time constraint, availability of persons and equipments. But still we endeavored to continue this training to learn new things, to revolutionize our way of teaching. We became resourceful individuals. At the start of the training I was amazed by the determination of the trainers in bringing the speech of Ma’am Villanueva to us via phone. Technology would make everything available only we need to be resourceful.

Not a single glitch would weaken us to graduate for this training.
Congratulations!

Alhamdulillah!!!!!!

Alhamdulillah!!!!! The first word I uttered when we had finished the second batch of our re-echo training here in MSU last July 28-30, 2006. I thought that it was sooo impossible for us to conduct the re-echo because of the very hectic sked we have here in MSU Chapter but I've proven it wrong, because we had done it successfully with the help of course of Allah, who is always there for us to guide; Sir Meoh, who is always there too to support, and of course our MSU officials are there too to support us. We in the MSU-External Units are all soooo busy in preparing for the incoming SASE next month. In this month, we'll have the Booster Review Classes definitely scheduled on August 21-30, 2006. Thanks a lot to all the people who had extended their help in conducting our re-echo traning.

To everyone, lets face the world of eMentoring with great vigor like Sir Meoh, kaya natin to guys! Press on mentors as what Sir Garsh said when he was still here in the country. Regards and Shukran, Sir Garsh! We miss you. Sir Meoh, Ma'am Maej, Ma'am Tata, and Ma'am Happy thanks a lot. Regards, folks!!!!!!!!

Re-echo Training-Workshop: Welcome Address by DR. MALAWI A. PANAMBULAN (Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, MSU)

"This is now my second time and opportunity to welcome the participants of these workshop trainings sponsored by the IBM eMentor Scholars' MSU Chapter. The sponsors of this training are the lucky applicants who underwent a very competitive selection process last September 2005 and a very rigid and extensive training on the rudiments of curriculum technology integration last January 2006 in STI, Davao City.

Ten (10) of the Top Thirty IBM eMentor Scholars are from Mindanao State University and I am proud to tell you that six (6) out of the ten scholars coming from MSU are from the MSU External Units and only four are from the main campus high school department. This team of scholars is chaired by Mrs. Maryam Q. Manalundong, a Math teacher of MSU Balindong who is actively involved in the implementation of e-technology not only in their school but also in the other units of the University. This team's commendable objective is to share their knowledge and expertise to all of those who are interested to enrich classroom instruction through the use of modern technology.

The IBM eMentor is a Corporate Community Relations Program on Teacher Professional Development in Educational Technology spearheaded by IBM Philippines in cooperation with EduQuest, Inc. and the USAID funded Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM). Many of the External Units are recipients of computers donated by the GEM.

As the traditional role of teachers is now challenged by new methods and strategies enhanced and facilitated by the power of Information and Computer Technology (ICT) applications and tools, IBM eMentor aims to develop the Contemporary Teacher of the Twenty First Century, one who is enabled to apply and adapt effective use of ICT to inspire interest and motivate students to become lifelong learners, impart knowledge, and facilitate community participation as partners in learning.

The advent of computers has made the teachers and the students lives easier. Through internet surfing, information about anything can just be easily availed of and research activities have become more hassle-free.

I commend your participation in this workshop training because I know that the skills that you may acquire from this training will help you in facilitating teaching and learning in your respective classes. You will be hopefully producing students from the countryside who will become globally competitive in the field of information technology.

Again, I welcome you to this training and I hope your three (3) day stay here in the campus for this activity will equip you with the necessary skills that will make the teaching-learning situation in classrooms more interesting and challenging to students.

Thank you."

Motivating Students Through Role Playing...

As I go on integrating modern technology in teaching my students, I realized that they should also be taught through other ways like role playing or having group collaboration or group activities.

Before presenting my PowerPoint Presentation about my lesson in angles and triangles, I let my students developed a short skit/role play about our topic. I grouped them into four groups (two groups presented about a story on angles and the other two groups presented about a story of triangles), I assigned them before hand to developed their own script to be presented three days before our topic is to be discussed.

Voila! I didn't expect that all of the groups presented a very enjoyable and interesting stories and acted as a true actor and actresses with matching props and etc. After their presentation, we have critiquing for them to make improvements if they will be given another chance of role playing.

All my students enjoyed during and after the presentations. And so with other year levels 'cause due to the extended time that we had, other students have witnessed the role playing of my Geometry Class (III - Pilot).

I hope other teachers will also find time to apply such kind of motivation for the students to explore on their own. As they go on developing their script they are also studying at the same time through researching what they will have to know for their presentations.

Ms. Marie

Insight from Participants

Opening message of our master teacher II during the opening program of my reecho....

“A man is on a boat. He is not alone , but acts as if he were. One night he began to cut a hole under his seat. His neighbors shriek, ‘Have you gone mad? Do you want to sink us all? Calmly, he answer them , What I’m doing is none of your business. I paid my way. I’m only cutting a hole under my own seat. ‘What the man will not accept, What you and I cannot forget, is that all of us are in the same boat.’’

Elie Weisel, winner of the noble prizes in 1986.

Our Philosophy of Education, which should be the ultimate basis of any curriculum Design or reform ,has to be relevant and responsive to our rapidly changing world. Because of instantaneous communication and mass transport of today, a distant event can have an immediate impact on one’s community, whose response can influence also the further unfolding of that event. Our world has become inseparably global and local or ‘global’.

The goal also of Computer Training is to train classroom teacher how to promote project-based learning and effectively .Integrate the use of computer into our teaching so that our student will increase their learning and achievement..

We are living more and more in a world in which we filter all kinds of information and news from far and near places and we act on the basis of that filtering process everyday. Our world is increasingly constituted by information , and is one in which we have to take many forward oriented decisions. Contemporary Filipino Learners are confronted with an explosion of knowledge and they have to take stock of a daily barrage of data and commentaries from far and near sources.

In order to become part of the so called Global competitiveness , We educators are the instruments of change towards such competition in order to embrace modernization at a higher aim of attaining sophistication.

With this training , we become aware of the rapid changing world in terms of computerization that is the current information technology. But of course this could not realized , with out functional literacy which includes essential skills like linguistic fluency and scientific numerical competence among our students.

Thus ,We ask: are our learners attaining functional literacy?
Hopefully with this training we will be able to attain our goal and not only our goal as MNHS teachers but to the DepEd goals of attaining more than quality basic education.

THANK YOU AND GOOD DAY !!!!

Mrs. Lourdes Ventura
